Vegetation Map

The Clough Pond Association is currently developing a map that identifies the types and locations of existing plant life in the pond. Although no invasive weeds have been detected so far, having this baseline map of native and non-invasive species will be valuable if any new or unwanted plant growth appears in the future.

If new vegetation is discovered, this baseline will assist our Weed Watchers and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) in determining: (1) which plant species are already known to be in the pond and where they are located, and (2) which species are new and may be non-native or potentially invasive.

Early detection and prompt reporting can mean the difference between Clough Pond becoming permanently infested with an invasive species or successfully eliminating it before it takes hold. Catching a problem early is essential to making eradication possible.

If detected early, the Clough Pond Association—working in partnership with the Towns of Loudon and Canterbury, along with NHDES—may be able to respond quickly enough to eradicate the invasive species before it spreads beyond control. Without early detection, eradication becomes unlikely, and long-term management—often costly and ongoing—may be the only remaining option.

This Base Map is still a work in progress, as not all existing native vegetation in the pond has been identified yet. We are actively working to complete it. The map will be updated as new plant species are observed by our Weed Watchers and confirmed by experts at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

There are still many details to be added to this Base Map. If you notice vegetation in areas not yet marked, please help by providing the exact location—ideally with GPS coordinates or an estimate of the distance from shore, along with the nearest property number. Your input will make a difference—and the pond will thank you.

Your best way to notify us would be to send us an email with that information and include photos as well if you can do that. Our generic email address would be the best one to use: info@cloughpondnh.org.

A list of the codes we use is available separately in this PDF document: Weed Watcher Codes.
